'Dam999' songs shortlisted for Oscars
MUMBAI: Three songs from the Indian film �Dam999', composed by Kerala-based National Award winning composer Ousephachan's have been shortlisted for the 84th Academy Awards.
The songs �Dakkanaga Dugu Dug', �Dam999 Theme Song' and �Mujhe Chhod Ke' are vying for a place among the 39 songs selected for the Academy Original Songs category.
Directed by Kerala-based naval architect Sohan Roy, Dam999 has also been shortlisted among the 265 films that made to the ballot list for the 2012 Academy Awards.
Sohan Roy said, This is a crowning achievement for �DAM999' and my dream project has attained the true recognition it deserves....
The soundtracks has been penned by Sohan Roy and composed by Ouseppachan. Ousephachan is a National Award, Filmfare Award and Kerala State Film Award-winning Indian music director who sets scores for Malayalam films. The movie comprises of nine multilingual soundtracks out of which five are in English, and two are in Hindi and Malayalam each. The �Dam999' audio was nationally distributed globally by Junglee Music, a label under the Times Music banner which offers mainstream film music. The songs are vocal by several National award winning singers including Hariharan, Shreya Ghoshal, KS Chithra, P Jayachandran and many more.
�Dam999' is a 3D-movie with a social cause to make the masses aware of an impending danger of a dam collapse, if not attended on time. The movie features Indian actors Rajit Kapur, Vimala Raman, Vinai Rai and Ashish Vidhyarthi. It has been dubbed in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam. The film was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures in India.
A total of 39 songs are selected for the Academy Original Songs category. On 5 January, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song, in random order, for voting members of the Music Branch in Los Angeles. Following the screenings, members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system of voting.
Under Academy rules, a maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. If more than two songs from a film achieve a score of 8.25 or more, the two songs with the highest scores will be the nominees.
To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on 24 January 2012, while the Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012.
