Suraj Jagan continues to bask in the 3 Idiots' sunshine
MUMBAI: Even though he has been on the music circuit for a while, vocalist Suraj Jagan's moment of glory came with 'Give Me some Sunshine' from 3 Idiots, the blockbuster hit of 2009.
Says the singer, "I have been a part of rock bands since 1989. Initially, I was roped in as a back up singer but ended up as the lead." He has been a part of several bands including Chakraview, and the most recent one has been Dream Out Loud. The singer has also been crooning jingles since a very long time. He is the voice behind U and I, Happy to Help, the hit jingles from Vodafone apart from several others like Reliance, HDFC.
The singer made his debut in Bollywood with Vishal Shekhar's Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi after which he sang for several other films. "I was singing one odd song in various movies and making my way till 3 Idiots happened." Talking excitedly about the song which has become the new youth anthem, the singer says, "I was suprised the way the song was received by the audience. The song was not promoted as much as the other tracks yet it got picked up on its own merit."
Talking further about the song, he adds, "I had done a jingle for Shanatanu Moitra two years ago, where he liked my vocals and he said that sometime he would use my voice. A few days ago, I heard his interview on radio in which he said he wouldn't have recorded the song if for some reason I couldn't sing it. It was a big compliment and I was elated on hearing that a song was composed keeping me in mind." The singer also won the Stardust Award 2009 New Musical Sensation - Male for the song.
"I am currently receiving a lot of attention because of the success of the song. I am getting much bigger shows. It feels nice to be in the main league and I am enjoying this positive stream till the time it lasts," he adds
His future projects include Vishal Shekhar's I Hate Love Stories, Patiala House, A Major, Hide and Seek, a Walt Disney untitled project apart from his gigs with his band. He has also recently sung a track for both My Name is Khan and Karthik calling Karthik, both by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy
The singer had also done a small cameo in Farhan Akhtar's Rock On !! along with crooning Zehereelay in the film. "Acting in the movie happened by chance. Farhan saw me while recording the song and asked me to audition for the role which I ultimately bagged. Acting is not my forte or priority. I am not going to go out and look for acting offers. Music will be my area of concentration," he adds.
