The Grammys are indeed the grandma: Vishal Dadlani

The biggest international music awards of the year, the 53rd Annual Grammys,  will be aired Live on Vh1 on Monday, 14 Feb,, at 6. 30 am, with a repeat the same night at 9 pm. We bring music lovers a series featuring the views of singers and composers like Vishal Dadlani, Uday Benegal, Luke Kenny, Hard Kaur and Monica Dogra examining this year's nominations and predicting winners. Today, Vishal Dadlani, leading Bollywood composer and lead vocalist for Pentagram, shares his views.

What do you think about the Grammy nominations this year?

I think a lot of amazing artists have come up in recent years. But there is a reason why the Grammys are named after the grandma, if I may – it's an award made up of Industry peers, and by that I mean old people and people who have been a part of the recording academy for a long time. The Grammys are indeed the grandma. Maybe that's the reason so many commercial artists get nominated time and time again.

What are your views about the hard rock category?

I think Stone Temple Pilots is a definitive band. The whole grunge scene for me was made up of Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

On Stone Temple Pilots' new record, I think it's above and beyond. Although the edge is missing on the particular track that's been nominated, I'm sure the entire album is brilliant. As I just said, the Grammys are made up of industry peers, so maybe that's why STP have watered down the song. And this watering down might be the reason they might have gotten the nomination. Their lyrics used to be more abstract.

Who are you rooting for?

These are some of the greatest performers the world has known. I think there's a strong chance either Alice In Chains or Soundgarden might win.

Tell us one event that has happened in the Grammys that you think was a standout.

Oh, Kanye getting on stage and picking on Taylor Swift was epic!

Ozzy, after all these years, still always manages to get a place in the Grammy nominees category. What are your views about that?

I think Ozzy is a clich?©!  He goes above and beyond the call of duty on Rock and Roll lifestyle. Though his music has been consistently outstanding.

What is it like for a rock group in India?

It's great because the scene is really bubbling. It's vibrant, and there are new kinds of music and new ideas. And people have stopped trying to be sound-alikes. It's more about your expression, your space and your life.
