MUMBAI: Like any other Bollywood debutant, music composer for 'Piku'- Anupam Roy, is elated with his first stint, working on a film that features Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan. The album comprises five songs, penned by Roy and Manoj Kumar.
Roy revealed that the opportunity came through the film's director- Shoojit Sircar. "Shoojit da and I have known each other for a while now. He got in touch with me last April and asked me to compose one song, after narrating the situation to me. So I went home composed something and got him to listen to the tune, and that very moment he confirmed the song would be included in the film. Then he also told me that I would be composing for the whole album and the film's background score," he said.
'Bezubaan' was the first song Roy composed for the film. He has also sung all five songs, of which two are duets with Shreya Ghosal and Sunidhi Chauhan. It took close to a year to compose all the tracks. Having worked with Ghoshal in the Bengali film industry, Roy was quite sure that only her voice would suit the song. "For the title track 'Piku', we tried a lot of singers currently singing in the industry, but the voices did not have that spunky element and this is how I thought of Sunidhi Chauhan. When she came to the studio, she did not make me feel that it was my debut project as she was very humble. Both Shreya and Sunidhi certainly stand out in their respective tracks," he elucidated.
He also revealed that as a newbie, the producers did not pressurise him to make a particular kind of melody. "Even when it came to the background score, Shoojitda asked me to interpret things on my own and make the best possible music," he added.
Roy, who hails from the 'City of Joy'- Kolkata, has been writing songs since he was 12 years old and has always wanted to become a composer. His interest in music came from his mother who would sing to him every evening and his father who also knows the art of playing various instruments. Till date he has written more than 300 hundred songs in Bengali, out of which only 90 have been released.
He is also extremely active in the Bengali music industry and has been getting quite a bit of recognition since being associated with 'Piku'. "The moment you do Bollywood projects, it changes people's perception towards you; I am getting a lot of recognition," he stated. Last year, he released an album titled 'Bakyo Bageesh', which translates to a person who only talks but does not act. He also intends to release another album as soon as he gets a breather from his film projects.
