Is the Chris Martin-curated Global Citizen Festival coming to India?

MUMBAI: Coldplay frontman Chris Martin's recent visit to India has certainly sparked rumours that he might headline ‘NH7 Weekender 2015’, considering the presence of OML’s Vijay Nair and AIB, and musicians Vishal Dadlani and Raghu Dixit. The British singer/songwriter was apparently at a dinner event in the capital city, after which he performed an impromptu gig at Summer House. However, there could be yet another angle to Martin’s India visit, which includes plans to stage the Global Citizen Festival in different countries around the world for the next 15 years.

In February this year, Global Citizen and Martin announced Global Citizen 2015, a new 15-year campaign to ensure the upcoming United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are achieved. The main aim of the programme is to end extreme poverty by 2030.

The decision was made based on the success of the annual Global Citizen Festival in New York City's Central Park. Many will remember it as the same event where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recited the famous Star War’s dialogue "May the Force Be With You?" The Central Park festival witnessed some of the biggest names coming together to spread the message.

Also spotted in some of the pictures of Martin in Delhi was actress Freida Pinto, who earlier on Wednesday posted a photo of herself at the Ministry of Women and Child Development office on Instagram.

Martin will act as the festival's curator over the next 15 years. Richard Curtis will serve as creative director for 2015, and Global Citizen and partner NGOs will coordinate the policy goals.
