BBC to launch radio station for Olympics 2012

MUMBAI: The BBC Trust has approved to launch a temporary Olympics radio station called BBC 5 Live Olympics Extra, for around 20 days during the Olympics. The temporary station will have a budget of ?200,000.

The BBC Trust has also approved plans to devote youth channel BBC Three for broadcasting the event next summer for its duration, which will see BBC Three switch from being an evening-only station to bring in daytime programmes during the sporting event, making it a predominantly Olympic station.  The channel will continue to have hourly news bulletins and return to its normal programming at around 11pm each night.

All-day coverage on BBC Three will cost about ?4.5m, the corporation said. BBC Three's daytime Olympics coverage will take place of BBC Parliament on Freeview, although it will be available on other platforms including cable, satellite and online.

The BBC Trust said that the impact on audiences of removing BBC Parliament from Freeview is expected to be "minimal" as the channel's unique reach – people who watch no other BBC service – is only about 120,000.

During this time BBC Radio 5 Live will continue to offer news and sport, including the Olympics, while digital station 5 Live Sports Extra will cover the London Games live except when test match cricket is being played.

In addition to the BBC's usual online coverage, the corporation has been given permission to offer about 1,000 hours of live Olympics video coverage, which will not be shown on TV. The extra 1,000 hours – which will fulfil its commitment to the International Olympic Committee to bring "every minute" of the event to UK audiences live – is not within the current scope of the BBC Online service licence.
