French baritone Laurent Naouri to perform live in India

MUMBAI: Aiming to enthrall the western classical music enthusiasts in India, French baritone Laurent Naouri is all set to debut in the country with live performance at the experimental theatre NCPA on 2 July.

Commenting on his first appearance in the city, Naouri said, “I am truly humbled at the opportunity to perform in India’s most talked-about city—Mumbai. I am told there is a bit of a musician in every Indian, and I am eagerly waiting to perform in a city that is so full of culture and life. I am sure it will be an experience that I will remember and cherish always.”

The artiste will be accompanied by award-winning pianist Maciej Pilkulski, who has performed on stages across 150 cities in 30 countries of five continents. Pilkulski who has performed in India earlier stated, “I have performed in India before, and to say that it was overwhelming will be an understatement. India is a melting pot of cultures, and people here have a great understanding of music—both Indian and Western. I cannot wait to perform for this absolutely wonderful audience again.”

Pikulski will also be performing his own recital of piano works by Beethoven and Liszt on 1 August at the Experimental Theatre.

NCPA Chairman Khushroo N Suntook said, “At the NCPA, it is our endeavour to bring world-class entertainment to the people of Mumbai. Bringing stalwarts such as Laurent Naouri and Maciej Pilkulski is a coup of sorts, and words are not enough to describe the brilliance of their work. We are certain that this will be an evening that will be etched forever in the hearts and minds of the audiences who will witness the Laurent-Maciej magic.”

Spanning over 400 years of music, Naouri has performed repertoire of over 40 roles across the globe with leading conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink and Valery Gergiev. The artistes most acclaimed roles have been the four villains from Tales of Hoffmann (Paris Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Lyon Opera, La Scala Milan) and Golaud from Pelleas et Melisande (Theatre des Champs-Élysées, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Salzburg Festival, Teatro Real Madrid, Theater an der Wien). The artiste has performed all the major Mahler song cycles - Schubert’s Winterreise, Schumann’s Dichterliebe; Liederkreis Op 24 and 39; most of Poulenc’s songs cycles; Faure’s La Bonne Chanson; Brahms’ Vier Ernste Gesänge; Rachmaninoff’s romances; and many other works, and is equally fond of chamber music and song recitals.
