Ghulam Ali Khan's performance cancelled due to security reasons

MUMBAI: The recent tensions between India and Pakistan have extended onto the musical front as well, with organizers cancelling Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali Khan’s performance for the tribute concert of Jagjit Singh titled ‘Ek Ehsaas - A Legendary Tribute’.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, concert organizer Randhir Ranjan Roy said, “Ghulam Ali Khan will not perform because of the security issue that has risen due to recent border problem. We have organized the event for an NGO Parineet, which provides mid-day meals for children. In case the event is cancelled, it will affect them. In order to prevent any such situation we called off Ghulam Ali Khan’s performance.”

The performance has been postponed to happen sometime in the near future, while the legendary ghazal singing couple Bhupinder and Mitali Singh have now been roped in for the tribute concert. Apart from them, the organizers are also trying to get renowned lyricists and script writers like Gulzar to grace the occasion with their poetry.

He added, “Ghulam Ali Khan had been associated with us for a while and we had invited him last December for an event in Pune also. We will have him back to India for some other event which will take place in May or June and will have many big stars in it. In his place, we now have Bhupinder and Mitali Singh who also belong to the same era as Jagjit Singh and will pay a fitting tribute to him.”

The concert will take place on 8 February, which is also Jagjit Singh’s birthday. Apart from the couple, renowned flautist Ronu Majumdar will also perform at the tribute concert to be held at Shanmukhanada hall, Sion, Mumbai.
