Music Canada thrusts Copyright reform bill

MUMBAI: The long overdue copyright legislation Bill C-32' has been tabled before the Canadian Government once again by Music Canada.

Music Canada, formerly known as the Canadian Recording Industry Association, proposed the legislative committee reviewing Bill C-32 in March 2011. The bill was projected by artistes Loreena McKennitt and Maia Davies along with representatives of the Canadian Independent Music Association and the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations.

Music Canada president Graham Henderson said, "As we've witnessed in the past, the process is important and knowing that the government is committed to ensuring this bill advances into law, unlike its three predecessors, is gratifying. Like any bill, we are fully confident it will undergo changes in committee, particularly given the consensus that developed during review of Bill C-32 that slight adjustments were needed so that the legislation would meet the government's anti-piracy objectives and support jobs in the creative industries."

Music Canada is a non-profit trade organization that represents the major record labels in Canada, namely EMI Music Canada, Sony Music Entertainment Canada, Universal Music Canada and Warner Music Canada. The members are engaged in all aspects of the recording industry, including the manufacture, production, promotion and distribution of music.
