Black and White

Music Director - Sukhwinder Singh

Director - Subhash Ghai

When super singer Sukhwinder Singh turns music composer, you are entitled to expect a decent score. But Singh disappoints with this effort, even if he does try to maintain the balance with a few breather tracks.

Haq Allah, sung by Hans Raj Hans and Sukhwinder Singh together, starts off in Islamic style as far as the music is concerned. But when Sukhwinder starts singing, it actually has a classical touch to it. And as the song progresses, it feels Punjabi. So one can't really categorize this song! Sukhwinder sounds superb, as always, and so are the lyrics. The stanza that leaves an impact on the listener is the one which goes - Teri maang mein tare bhar du, tujhe aaj mein suhagan kar du¦ all-in-all, a good song which could have ended more suitably.

The second track Haq Allah sung by Sukhwinder alone starts off very energetically. The chorus adds life to the start. The fast paced beats and Sukhwinder's vocals in the background give a high to the song. This is one brilliant song but is too short to relish the feel of it completely.

Sadhana Sargam and Sukhwinder Singh come together for the next track titled Jogi Aya. This slow paced song has an overall classical touch to it. Since the song sounds as though it was recorded over a decade ago, it won't appeal much. But the beats, passion and feel of the song are, in all, great.

After the original, one expects the Jogi Aya remix to work on the feel of the song which is lacking in the original. But when the song starts, it's an altogether mess. A greater disappointment than the original!

Sukhwinder Singh is heard again in the track Main Chala. But this time, this is a solo song where he gets to showcase his talent fully. He's done complete justice to the song and its spirit. Public demand seems to be the inspiration for the lyrics as the song speaks about a person who is trying to find his purpose in life. The song might be the next chartbuster, so wait and watch.

Main Chali by Shreya Goshal follows next. This sounds better than the male counterpart of the track. The lyrics have once again dominated the song. The background score here seems to be a little mellowed as compared to the other songs. The charming voice of Shreya definitely makes this song a great composition.

The next track Peer Manavan sees Shraddha Pandit and Sukhwinder Singh together. The female voice sounds very childish when juxtaposed with the matured voice of Sukhwinder. Compositions like these really compliment Sukhwinder as a singer. The chorus is energetic and contributes to making the song sound good in totality. The track sounds like a family song and hence, very situational in composition.

The remix version of Peer Manavan follows next. High on beats, pace and energy; this is the only way how the remix differs the original.

The last two tracks of the album are Yeh Hindustani Hai, the former sung by Udit Narayan and the latter by Jagjit Singh. Udit's track sounds like a forced effort, a patriotic song like this should have a patriotic feel and energy, but this one sounds like a drag. The lyrics too sound very monotonous. It is a mere pale reminder of Sonu's earlier song - Sandese aate hain from Border.

The latter version sung by Jagjit Singh is a tempo kind of a track with minimum use of background score. This song sounds worse than Udit Narayan's track too. There is nothing inspiring about the track ?“ neither the lyrics, nor the vocals nor the background score.

Singh as a music composer provides is that he has great background scores in fast paced songs but isn't able to capture the spirit in the singers'voices. Also, he hasn't harnessed talent present in the music industry to make more sense out of the songs. This album which could have been a great debut, suffers as Singh has not made good use of vocals.

If only Sukhvinder would stick to singing....
