MUMBAI: J Jayalalithaa, known best for her political acumen, shot into the limelight thanks to the silver screen. Starting as a child artiste, she acted in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu films. But a lesser known fact is that Jayalalithaa was also a wonderful playback singer for the film industry in the South in her golden era.

From the year 1961 to 1981, she has rendered her voice for songs in Tamil films picturised on herself . Working with artists like T. M. Soundararajan, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, P. Susheela and L. R. Easwari the songs she has sung are 'Porkudathil Pongum Ezhir Suvaiyo', 'Madras Mail', 'Maariyamma Muthu Maariyamma', 'Kaali Mahamaayi Karumaariyaanavale', 'Thanga Mayileri Varum Engal Vadivelavan'.
