An ode to dancing queen Madhuri Dixit on her 51st Birthday

MUMBAI: There is not a soul among Hind Film lovers that grew up during late 80’s and whole of 90’s, that didn’t catch a fancy for Madhuri Dixit. She ruled every man’s fantasy and was every girl’s idol. That smile, charm, and acting skills made her a phenomenon. Years passed by, many came and went, but Madhuri continues to rule the hearts. In her career, due to her dancing abilities, has many hits credited to her account. Let’s take a look at some of her amazing songs on her 51st birthday.

Ek Do Teen-Tezaab : As cliché as it goes, but this one tops the list. Forget best of Madhuri, it will feature in best of super hit songs in film history too. This song actually put her on the map and people took notice of her. Legendary stories of rehearsing this song along with choreographer Saroj Khan have been ample. Sung by Alka Yagnik, lyrics by Javed Akhar and music by Laxmikant Pyarelal, this song is what it means to have a commercial hit. The song that shows the lead yearn for her lover to come back, also takes the narrative ahead of the film. This song was recently reprised by Jacqueline Fernandez for Baaghi 2, however, it sank without a trace. Rightfully so, as some epics should be best left untouched.

Dum Duma Dum-Dil : Legend goes that this song was added after the movie was released and already a hit. The producers still added this song and this made the film a super duper hit. The song has Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit having a face off and is as entertaining as it can get. Campus rivalry expressed through some Bollywood ishtyle dance, but Madhuri who is wearing skin tight pink dress, carries it with aplomb.

Tu Shayar Hai- Sajan : A stellar star cast in a love triangle, has Madhuri’s character falling in love with a poet whom she has never seen. This song is completely dance oriented with outlandish costumes, and million background dancers. Besides her flawless dancing, what stands out is her disarming smile.

Bada Dukh Dina- Ram Lakhan : In Anil Kapoor’s words, this was the song when he realised a star is here. This song has Madhuri dancing to semi classical dance moves. In a very dramatic situation in the film, when the villans ask the heroine to dance, and she dances only to remember her missing lover. Music by Laxikant Pyarelal and vocals by Lata Mangeshkar, this song is an epitome of Bollywood dances and music.

Humko Aaj Kaal Hain- Sailaab : A song that came before the word item number came into picture. Madhuri looks alluring in this sizzling number, which features in a rather serious film, with her as a lead. The song has a set up of fishermen locality and again has the lead longing for her lover. Her killer dance move set to Bappi Lahiri’s tune and Anupama Deshpande voice, is an amazing song.

Dhak Dhak- Beta: The movie that got her one more Filmfare award, had many hit songs, but Dhak Dhak still stands out. So much was the craze of this song, that Madhuri was addressed as Dhak Dhak girl for the longest. Sung by Anuradha Paudwal and composed by Anand Milind, has Madhuri in the most seductive ever avatar.

Didi Tera Dewar-Hum Aapke Hain Koun : Be it the purple sari or her dance moves, nothing about this song is not popular. The family entertainer was almost musical with over 14 songs, but this song was and is a craze. Salman-Madhuri’s chemistry, Lata Mangeshkar’s vocals, and Raam Laxman’s music made this song a legendary one.

Ankhiyon Milayun-Raja : Madhuri Dixit dancing with her reel life lover Sanjay Kapoor in a godforsaken garage with wet hair and eye rolling is an unforgettable scene. The song gave that generation set of dance moves that helped them impress their partners.

Mera Piya Ghar Aya-Yaarana : There is something with Madhuri Dixit and her songs that make her yearn for her lover. Yet another gem, where Madhuri is dancing like no one has before. This fast paced song makes Madhuri dance to her best. Possibly the only thing that people remember of this movie is this dance number.

Chane Ke Khet Mein- Anjaam : Madhuri’s first film with Shah Rukh Khan is a revenge saga, but still a dance number found a way in the story, and we are not complaining. The green lehenga twirling around and the signature move made this song most memorable.

Choli Ke Piche-Khalanayak : In her rather non-controversial career, this song stands out as the biggest controversy of her life. The movie Khalanayak itself was mired with controversy, as the lead actor Sanjay Dutt was under custody before it released. This song is the mother of all item songs, with dubious double meaning lyrics and never seen before dancing. A song sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun, earned massive success and many accolades, despite the controversy.

Maar Dala- Devdaas : A movie where Madhuri plays the legendary courtesan, Chandramukhi, who was known for her selfless love for Devdas. This song is a challenge that Chandramukhi wins and dances to celebrate to see Devdas after a long time, has Madhuri dancing to Kathak moves, a dance form she is formally trained into.
