MUMBAI: 26th January 2015 will see India celebrate its 66th Republic Day. Each year, on this day, every Indian takes pride being a part of the largest democratic nation in the world. Over the years, Bollywood has been instrumental in creating some of the best music that projects these emotions on screen. On the occasion of Republic Day, we look at some of the movies with a patriotic music theme.
The Legend of Bhagat Singh: Based on the story of martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and many more, the movie 'Legend of Bhagat' has some amazing patriotic numbers like 'Desh Mere' 'Sarfaroshi Ke Tamanna' and 'Mera Rang De Basanti'. The music of the film was composed by AR Rahman, one of the most prominent names in patriotic music. The song 'Desh Mere' was crooned by AR Rahman and Sukhwinder Singh, while 'Sarfaroshi Ki Tammana' was sung by Sonu Nigam. The track 'Mera Rang De Basanti' featured vocals by Sonu Nigam and Manmohan Waris.
Fanna: The movie is based on an innocent, blind Kashmiri girl who falls for a terrorist. The film has a song called 'Des Mera Rangila' sung by Mahalaxmi Iyer. The track describes India as a diverse nation in terms of topography, languages, clothing etc yet united. The way the line 'Desh Rangila' is sung by Mahalaxmi Iyer with a chorus that will surely give you goosebumps. The lyrics of this song are penned by Prasoon Joshi and the music is composed by Jatin-Lalit.
Swades: Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the movie had the most soulful patriotic song 'Ye Jo Des Hai Tera' which is sung and composed by AR Rahman and is penned by Javed Akhtar. The movie is based on an Indian scientist who works for NASA and on his visit to India, witnesses the hardship of the people. After resuming his duties in the US the track takes the story forward as he realises his duty towards his motherland. The line 'Aa Laut Chal Tu Ab Deewane, Jahan Koi To Tujhe Apna Mane', will surely leave you teary eyed.
Chak De: The title track 'Chak De' will again bring goose bumps. The movie talks about the journey of the coach of Indian women's hockey team and his tactics to bring glory to India. The music is composed by Salim – Sulaiman and the lyrics are penned by Jaideep Sahni. The song is sung by Sukhwinder Singh.
Mary Kom: The song 'Salaam India' from the film 'Mary Kom' pumps you with a feeling of patriotism. Based on the true story of Indian boxer- Mary Kom, the song takes the story forward, when she wishes to comeback to pursue her dream in boxing after a break of a few years. The song is composed by Shivam and is sung by Vishal Dadlani and Salim Merchant. The lyrics of the song are penned by Sandeep Singh.
