MUMBAI: Adele's '25' is currently the talk of the town, and after breaking records within the first week of its release, the British songwriter's newest album has added yet another feather in its cap. With sales of 800,307 copies, Adele's third studio album has made the biggest opening week sales in the history. '25' breaks the record earlier held by British rock band Oasis whose fourth studio album 'Be Here Now' sold 696,000 copies in its first week of release in 1997.
On 25 November, Official Charts reported '25', the current chart topper, recorded more sales than the following 86 albums on the chart combined. Moreover, the album has also become the most downloaded number one album ever.
The album's 252,423 downloads beat Ed Sheeran's 'X' which sold 95,709 copies last year.
The album's record-breaking streak started with beating Britney Spears' single-week album sales for a female artist, who had garnered 1.32 million sales for her album 'Oops!....I Did It Again' in 2000. Not long after that ‘25’ broke NSYNC's record of 2.42 million set in 2000 with the release of 'No Strings Attached'.
While the feat is great for Adele, her record-breaking album has benefited more than just the 27-year-old Grammy winner. The sales count increased by 674,000 as compared to the previous week, resulting into a 21 per cent growth.
