MUMBAI: The ultimate 2015 friendship song that has managed to make its space in the New Year is ‘Atrangi Yaari’ from ‘Wazir. And one man who has made it all possible is music composer-singer-lyricist Rochak Kohil. Kohli not only managed to create a tune straight from his heart, he also managed to convince two of the best Indian actors to sing it. Well, we are referring to Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar. However, this is not the first time that the music composer has made an artist sing to his tunes. He is best remembered for his associations with actor-singer Ayushmann Khurrana. In fact, ‘Pani Da Rang’ was Kohli’s first song to get him much deserved attention from the industry insiders and others alike.

Over the years, Kohil has given the Hindi music industry some unforgettable renditions. Therefore, the success of ‘Atrangi Yaari’ was obvious to most but Kohli. The music composer did not expect ‘Atrangi Yaari’ to get the response that it has since its release. “The song has managed to reach different age groups, but I did not expect it. I am overwhelmed. I had got a similar response for ‘Pani Da Rang’,” stated the composer. He further added, “These songs cannot be made. They come straight from the heart and the break the clutter.”

Kohil is known for melodious tunes, but he also likes other styles of music. “All songs are important. The ones that lift up the spirit, or the romantic ones or those that are situation based. As a music composer I just believe that one needs to do justice to their own song,” said Kohli.

Most people learn from their mistakes or achievements, but for Kohli that cannot be the case. The composer never gets back to his compositions post their release. “I avoid listening to my compositions. I just don’t like getting into that zone of ‘wow! I made this’ or ‘S***! I made this’ because the later zone is really bad. So, the moment the master of the song is done, I move to the next song. One of the other reasons for my doing so is that you cannot get back and change the song once it’s out. There are times when wrong mixes go as the final version because you have 18 versions of the mixes. This happens with every music composer, be it A.R. Rahman or Pritam,” explained the ‘Saadi Galli’ music composer.

Getting back to ‘Atrangi Yaari’ and its singers (‘Wazir’s lead actors) Kohli stated that it’s not easy to get an artist to sing your song. The artists are exclusive therefore one has to have a composition that will make them work. He also went on to reveal that he would have sung ‘Atrangi Yaari’ if he had failed to get Bachchan and Akhtar on board. But, luckily he managed to get both.

Kohil also gives credit of the songs success to his producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Chopra spent two days on the song with the composer and his team.

The‘Oh Hireeye’ composer who is currently working on two songs for the Ajay Devgan starrer ‘Shivaay’ and the Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer ‘Monsoon Shootout’ respectively believes that he is on the verge of creating a niche in the music industry. However, this will happen only if he continues making music and we wish he does.
