MUMBAI: The 'Fan' anthem is out.
In the title track of the film released today, SRK plays Gaurav the die hard fan of Aaryan, the star - needless to say, SRK himself. So, the star plays the fan paying an ode to his own self, the superstar.
The song is an ode to small town youngsters' obsession with film stars and the expression of their craze. Thus lyrics like 'follow karoon twitter pe, tag karoon Facebook pe' make their way into the song right at the outset. The lyrics are credited to Varun Grover and the singer is Nakash Aziz, who does a fair job of infusing the song with the energy it needs.
The die-hard Shah Rukh Khan fan will definitely exult at the superstar's exuberance in the video as he dances in balconies, hops on to poles and skips along crowded bylanes of Delhi.
One can only hope the critics will be equally kind to the ageing SRK trying too hard to win over audiences with his OTT acting in the song. This track is unlikely to count among Vishal-Shekhar's best melodies, but it is a catchy track, with the right mix of fun beats, fast pace and lyrics that the younger set identifies with and the older set cringes at.
There is of course the audience that loves lyrics like 'Mere mobile ka tu unlimited plan ho gaya', so it might just strike that chord with the right marketing mix.
The song made its debut online at 4 pm on Tuesday. SRK, as the film's protagonist Gaurav, skips on roof tops, climbs poles and dances across crowded streets in Delhi to prove his point as a true-blue star struck fan. He even plants a kiss on his own mega -self on a hoarding on one of the capital's highways.
Directed by Maneesh Sharma, Fan will release on 15 April, 2016.
The 'Fan' anthem is the only song in the film.
Our verdict: SRK has come a long way since his 'Yes Boss' days when he crooned 'Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon...'. on equally crowded streets and still won hearts. Perhaps he had the right accompaniment of good lyrics and melody to help him along then!
