Rahman scores a winner with 'Ginga'

MUMBAI: Titled after Pele's popular style, 'Ginga' - the single from the soon-to-be-released biopic 'Pele' - has a celebratory vibe to its aural package that will be featured during the end credits of the movie.

Created by the producers of Friday Night Lights and Apollo 13, 'Pele: Birth of a Legend' tells the miraculous story of the legendary soccer player’s rise to glory from a young impecunious boy. For the song launch at PVR Gold Mumbai on Monday morning, music director A R Rahman explained the several parallels between the two icons on their respective rise to stardom and the obstacles faced. Known for his extensive research on the subject of each project he takes up, Rahman elaborated on how YouTube videos and the existing Brazilian sounds helped him design the soundtrack and the theme for the movie. From a life full of disadvantages and an impoverished youth in Brazil, Pelé used his unorthodox yet authentic style of play - called 'Ginga' - and his unbeatable spirit to overcome all odds, find greatness and inspire a country that he changed forever.

'Pele' becomes the second biopic of a sportsman that Rahman has associated his music with, and the Academy winner has ensured that non-Brazilians as well as Brazilians would connect to the sound of 'Pele'.

Produced by Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer, ‘PELÉ' has been directed and written by Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist, both Emmy Award-nominated writers. The film stars Kevin de Paula, Vincent D’Onofrio, Rodrigo Santoro, Diego Boneta and Colm Meaney and will release in theatres on 13 May by PVR Pictures.
