Daler Mehndi's 'Tunak Tunak Tun' returns to sweep Europe off its feet

MUMBAI: Most songs fade out in no time, while a few stay longer on the shelves. Then there are those that go on to create a cult status for themselves. Daler Mehndi's 1998 song 'Tunak Tunak Tun' seems to have reached that zenith.

The song that achieved a lot of fame during its release in the late 1990s has now started to become a rage amongst students in Europe as well. They have been using the song as a stressbuster. In fact, the famous 'Tunak Tunak Tun' step too is being practised by these students.

In a recent development, Hollywood actor and martial arts expert Jackie Chan was seen dancing to Mehndi's tunes with Bollywood actor Sonu Sood at the 17th Shanghai Film Festival. The video went viral in no time.

Responding to the video, Mehndi said, "I feel overjoyed to see the video, Jackie Chan has danced brilliantly."

This is not the first time that Daler Mehndi has captivated the audience with his remarkable numbers. But, 'Tunak Tunak Tun' which has become immortal, was entirely created by Daler Mehndi himself.

Says the singer, "There was a time when I bore the brunt of criticism from various media. They concluded that my songs would not last for long. They also assumed that my songs become hits because they include glamour and nothing else. But I was clear and had faith in myself. Around this time, I decided to do something, entirely on my own. Thus, 'Tunak Tunak Tun' happened and I put my 100 per cent in it. I did everything from penning the lyrics of this song to sound designing and costumes."

Well, the hard work has not gone in vain. Other than European students, Chan and many European publications that want to interview the singer, the song is also much in demand in Germany. If Mehndi is to be believed, German filmmakers have approached him to use the song in a documentary.

Looks like the King of Punjabi music is all set to explore newer countries with 'Tunak Tunak Tun'.
