Chennai commences its tryst with World Music Day

MUMBAI: For a music lover, every 21 June stands as another opportunity or an excuse to check out for best live music venues or organisers planning unique initiatives to celebrate the occasion. Earth Sync, in its joint collaboration with The Rhapsody Music Foundation, Alliance Française of Madras, Goethe-Institut Chennai, InKo Centre, KM Music Conservatory and Musee Musicals, has commenced the sixth edition of 'World Music Day' that will span across a week - dated 17 June to 22 June.

Celebrated on the same day in over 460 cities in 110 countries, the vision of Fête de la Musique is to bring the entire community together through the medium of music, a tribute to the idea that music exists for and by everyone. The upcoming edition will see a series of music performances and workshops at venues all across Chennai.

“The Alliance Française of Madras is again delighted to be part of the Fête de la Musique initiated in France in 1983,” says Director of Alliance Francaise of Madras, Pierre-Emmanuel, “Faithful to its spirit, we will invite amateurs and semi professional music group to perform as well as established artists. Vive la musique!”

This year’s music performances will feature a variety of diverse genres and artists of various musical leanings. ”Last year, we programmed 25 independent artists at venues across the city” says CEO of EarthSync, Sonya Mazumdar, “similarly this year we will showcase a kaleidoscope of vivid sounds and vibrant performers, while also making it a point to offer burgeoning artists a platform to share their craft. Our primary aim is to bring the whole community together, united in its passion and appreciation for the arts”. “We love the original idea of Fête de la Musique: Music knows no limits” says Helmut Schippert, Director, Goethe Institut, “Music belongs to everyone – Nadabrahmam, the world is sound, the origin of everything. So play and sing on the street corners, play and sing in public, even if it’s hot in Chennai on June 21st.”

Other countries celebrating the festival across the globe include Germany, Italy, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, Congo, Japan and South Korea. “As an organization dedicated to strengthening the intercultural dialogue between India and Korea, we believe that the arts have the ability to lead people on journeys of discovery, dissolving divisive boundaries and irrevocably transform hearts and minds”, says Director of InKo Centre, Rathi Jafer, “We are delighted to have partnered with like-minded cultural organisations in Chennai since 2013, to unearth fresh talent and to invite an ever-widening circle of musicians and music lovers in Chennai, to join us on this reverberating and exciting annual musical journey.”
