MUMBAI: RJ Sandhya's suicide case has been a mystery from day one but there seems to be a ray of hope with her husband being arrested.

RJ Sandhya Singh (28) was found dead in the Army Quarters of Bollarum, Hyderabad on 17 April. After 16 days her husband Major Vaibhav Vishal (30) is now under police custody. The police arrested him yesterday at 1 pm.

On the day of the incidence, Vishal complained of chest pain and was admitted to the ICU ward of the army hospital. As his condition turned better, the army officials handed him to the police.

Vishal is charged under sections 304-B (dowry death) and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

According to the police, Sandhya was harassed for dowry by her husband and his family soon after their ‘love marriage’.

The police have in-hand proofs against Vishal for dowry harassment. He was produced in the local court and will be under judicial remand for 14 days. The police will file a charge-sheet within 15 to 20 days.

Vishal’s mother and sister are also accused by Sandhya's family for being a part of the dowry harassment. The police are tracking his mother Dr. Asha Singh (62), a gynecologist and sister Khushi Megha Rai (29), an employee of HDFC insurance.

RJ’s sister Uma Singh believes that Sandhya is murdered by Vishal. She refuses to believe that her sister can commit suicide.

“As per Vishal’s statement, the two had dinner at 10 pm and slept until 12 am. At 3 am, Vishal woke up and didn’t find Sandhya besides him so started searching for her. That is when she was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the next room. Vishal alerted his neighbour about the same before he fainted. We were informed by his neighbour Colonel Lobo about our sister’s condition at 5:30 am. Lobo took the body to the army mortuary but they denied taking the body. Around 10 am the local police was informed about the incidence,” said Uma Singh.

Vishal also has an elder sister Tulika who resides in Pune and she has been frequently visiting Vishal since his hospitalisation. She is now trying to get him a bail.

 “The family has planned the murder and his younger sister and mother are now trying to hide. I am firm on my statement because we have proofs and the two have switched off their cell phones since 18 April night,” added Uma.

Uma further claimed that Vishal was not in critical condition. In fact, he was in the hospital bed only in the day time and was found in the rest-house the remaining time. She says it was a trap so he could have time to apply for anticipatory bail. But as things did not work according to his plan, he finally decided to surrender.  

All the accusations by Uma need to be clarified as nothing is proved and we hope that the police solve the mystery soon.

Sandhya, who worked for Radio Charminar, Hyderabad was found hanging in the army quarters where she resided with her husband. The couple after their marriage could not stay together as Vishal had a transferable job. The two, at last, started staying together in the Army Quarters, Secunderabad since 2016.
