To be something you need to do something like a 'wannabe': Raftaar

MUMBAI:  Swag Mera Desi introduced rapper Raftaar to the world and since, then there has been no looking back for this talented man. Today, he is not just a rapper, but also a guide to many aspiring singers-rappers. He is always ready to lend a helping hand. But, do you know what inspired him to be in the music industry? Well, we at Radioandmusic.com get you the details.

This Malayalam family boy had no musical family background and this made understanding music difficult for him. “Nobody in my family is related to music especially Punjabi. The conversion from Dilin Nair to Raftaar Singh was difficult,” said Raftaar.

Raftaar was in his earlier grades in school when his father bought him Michael Jackson (MJ) song CDs. While the songs were played, Raftaar would sing random Hindi lyrics along, even though they made no sense.

“I was in grade 2 or 3 when I learned about rhyming words. I gave a thought to those words like cat-bat-sat-rat wow, this is amazing and I had no idea till then that words can match up,” said the Baby Marvake Manegi singer.

This was the time when the rapper started understanding the process of songwriting. “A friend of mine gave me a compilation of songs in an MP3 player which had songs of Linkin Park. While listening to him I understood that he just rhymes words and I can do that,” added Raftaar.

In the process of understanding music, songwriting and singing, Raftaar learned a very important lesson and one of the reasons why he is famous and successful today. He said, “Just like a ‘wannabe’ I started rhyming words, making my own lyrics and that is when I understood, to be something you need to do something like a 'wannabe'.”
