It was a challenge to create vintage music for '102 Not Out': Salim-Sulaiman

MUMBAI: Can you ever forget the music given to songs like Ali Maula or Haule Haule, no right? Because this jodi gives music which stays in people’s hearts forever, and this time the siblings made music for Bollywood biggies Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor in 102 Not Out. Yes, we are talking about Salim-Sulaiman whose contribution for this particular movie album will always be counted upon. With music rendered for Bacche Ki Jaan to Kulfi in the film, the duo had a ride full experience and they joyously share it with us.

Film 102 Not Out with its captivating tale had unique characters too, the movie was slated a big one as it included legends. It must have surely been a big challenge for the music duo to set a benchmark, “The fact that both of them have shared the screen space after a long time, it was a challenge for us to reach that level and yet create something unique. When we heard the story we found it interesting to take the world of these two characters and make it our own,” said Salim-Sulaiman.

They further explain, “Bachhe Ki Jaan showcases an interesting part of the film where Bachchan Sahab sets some rules for his son (Rishi Kapoor). Rishi Kapoor in the film is an OCD character who is paranoid of dying and living both, also he’s a serious character. Bachchan ji cannot handle this as he’s his father and wants him to change. He makes Rishi Kapoor’s life a little difficult and that’s where we have got music for this track.”

In Bachhe Ki Jaan one would witness Amitabh Bachchan making a constant effort in getting Rishi Kapoor out of his ‘character’, while music given to it is quite a funky one, “We gave it a Latin feel as we wanted to create a slightly old world charm. It was a challenge to create vintage music. Also it was our conscious effort not to make it flimsy or casual; we wanted to bring the essence of the film, while making it fun at the same time. We built a connect of the film through its music,” expressed the duo.

While giving music to a huge film like 102 Not Out is not a piece of cake, there were many behind the scenes, “We had to enhance the fun element to it, we recorded the horns in New York. Music in our tracks breathes fresh air; also you get a smile on your face when you listen to it. In terms of music, we wanted to make something that would stand out and that is why we have given an organic touch to the songs,” explains Salim-Sulaiman on the music making process.

The third track Kulfi from the movie 102 Not Out, composed by Salim-Sulaimaan will give you a ghazal feel, “You hear the song and you will be in a bubble of thoughts on the word ‘kulfi’ but when you watch the film you get to know, ‘you’re talking about kulfi in terms of memories’ which is again colloquial, ‘When we say oh this guy has lost his marbles, he’s lost his head and at that time you suddenly realize what kulfi actually means, ‘whose memories are still alive.’ So, we have tried to use words which are colloquial and put the music in its purest form,” explained Salim Merchant.
