MUMBAI: Almost every Hindi movie made, since the advent of talkie cinema, has had an essence of music in it. But, there are very few movies that were based, solely, on musicians and their journey. We, therefore, thought of sharing the noteworthy, among them, to celebrate their musical stories. So, let’s have a look at six movies, whose lead character was a musician.
Baiju Bawara
Going backward, straight into 5os, Baiju Bawara is a classic based on the life of Baiju Bawar a young singer at the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Starring Bharat Bhusan and Meena Kumari, Baiju Bawara boasts of finest music. The music director of the movie, Naushad was conferred with his only Filmfare award in a long, illustrious career.
Abhimaan
Abhimaan is a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film, starring the iconic pair of Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya. The film showcases story of a famous singer, who marries a small-town girl with superlative singing talent, which outshines his popularity post marriage. The music of the movie by S D Burman is still a hit and loved by one and all.
Karz
Karaz, a reincarnation drama, featuring the story of one rockstar Ravi Verma, played by Rishi Kapoor was a massive hit. Each and every song has been a classic and still tops the charts. Hit music composer duo, Laxmikant Pyarelal composed some of the evergreen songs like Dard E Dil and Bachna Ae Haseeno for the film. In 2008, an abysmal remake of the film, Karzzzz, starring Himesh Reshammiya and Urmila Matondkar released but sank without any trace. However, the songs of the original movie still hold a ring to it.
Rockstar:
Rockstar fetched Ranbir Kapoor both awards and critical acclaim. The movie presented the story of a musician and had a philosophical take on his journey and muse, played by Nargis Fakhri. The songs of Rockstar are composed by the true Rockstar of India, A R Rahman. From grunge to Sufi, the movie album covers almost every genre of music. The movie also saw some amazing singing by Mohit Chauhan, who has sung most of the songs of Rockstar. Another key highlight of the film is that it marks the last appearance of superstar, late Shammi Kapoor on silver screen. He played the role of a Shennai maestro in the movie.
Rock On!
Farhan Akhtar and Arjun Rampal starrer, Rock On, found an audience due to its relatable story on suppressed desires. While the film’s music by hit trio, Shankar Ehsaan Loy was loved by the audience, Farhan Akhtar’s singing was noteworthy too. Also, the quirky lyrics added to the magic of the songs, crooned by a magical band, shown in the movie.
