MUMBAI: Having already made global chart history with their latest album ‘Youngblood’, cementing them as the only band (not vocal group) in chart history to see its first three full-length studio albums enter the US chart at #1 - 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS), today reveal the official music video for new single Valentine, directed by the band’s own Ashton Irwin with Andy Deluca.
‘Valentine’ arrives just ahead of 5SOS’ return to the UK as part of their sold out Meet You There headline world tour, beginning with two nights in Glasgow at The O2 Academy this October.
On album Youngblood, 5SOS expands its musical parameters while retaining the hooks and trademark DNA that’s always been a massive part of the band’s appeal. Luke Hemmings explains, “Growing up is what we had to do on ‘Youngblood’. Seven years as a band may seem like a long time, but we were teenagers when we started. We had to look at each other and say, ‘Are we going to stop now, or do this forever? Because if we continue, then we have to go farther than we ever have before.”
Following 5SOS’ five-plus years of recording and touring behind its first two albums, the band relocated from Australia to Los Angeles to find a new set of collaborators, influences, and inspirations. This time in LA evocatively enrich songs from the new album - evoking the adventurous sounds, grooves, and emotions of artists spanning The Police, INXS and The Church to Gorillaz and The Presets. Those influences are clear in the trippy synths and sexy reggae-influenced beats in new single ‘Valentine’ (produced by Mike Elizondo and co-written with Justin Tranter, a key creative force for hits by Imagine Dragons, Fall Out Boy,
Linkin Park, Justin Bieber, and Gwen Stefani). “This album is about finding the balance between where our audience is, and where we are, so we can grow together,” says Clifford. As such, Youngblood reflects 5SOS’ growth and discovery during their creative and personal odyssey in Los Angeles.
The band’s latest album ‘Youngblood’, went straight to the top spot of the Billboard 200 when released in June 2018 and has already sold more than million copies. ‘Youngblood’ the album’s title song – quickly became a global smash hit, with cumulative worldwide sales already surpassing 3.5 million. The single has also taken the No. 1 slot on both Apple
Music’s biggest pop playlist, ‘Today’s Hits’ and Spotify’s ‘Today’s Top Hits’ playlist. The track has also hit Spotify’s Global Top 10 and topped Australia’s official singles chart for 8 consecutive weeks, giving ‘Youngblood’ the joint-3rd longest spell at number one for an Australian act in the ARIA chart.
Hailed as the “biggest new rock act in the world” by Rolling Stone, 5SOS’s self-titled debut album has sold more than 4.1 million worldwide, with 3.6million albums sold and more than 6.5million singles sold in the U.S alone. 2015’s ‘Sounds Good Feels Good’ charted at number one in 12 countries, including the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. She’s Kinda Hot, the album’s first single, topped the iTunes charts in 44 countries. 5SOS – comprising Luke Hemmings
(vocals/guitar), Michael Clifford (vocals/guitar), Calum Hood (vocals/bass) and Ashton
Irwin (vocals/drums) – has won an American Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, an
iHeartRadio Music Award, five MTV European Music Awards, two ARIA Awards and an MTV
Video Music Award.
