17-year old Shannon K's third single 'OMT' with Sonu Nigam is about teenage love

MUMBAI: Singer-songwriter Shannon K, 17, has touched upon many issues faced by teenagers, through her songs. One of them is Give me your hand that dealt with bullying. Daughter of one of the most popular singers of 90’s Kumar Sanu, has come up with her third sing single called OMT that speaks of teen Love.

“OMT is teen love song, that is full of love and pure innocence and you would get an insight of what girls/boys do these days when they like someone,” Shannon shared.

Juggling her academics with a blooming singing career, Shannon has already been featured as artist of the month on B4U UK, awarded Best original singer for Lately by IFAB USA and been of covers of international magazines and gearing up for a string of singles in 2019, each with a different flavour and story to it. As a student, she wants to study and become a Psychiatrist so she can help teens, who get affected by social media trolls and self harm themselves. She wrote Give Me Your Hand song about it.

She explains how the idea of OMT came to her post Give Me Your Hand, “OMT was written prior to Give Me Your Hand. The idea of OMT came through one of my journals that I had written. I wanted to experiment and see if I could make this into a song to have it as a memory and with the help of my sister, we sat down and wrote lyrics to the song. An amazingly talented Oscar nominated producer, Kyle Townsend then enchanted her lyrics by giving us his beautiful music, which fit perfectly to the mood and style of the song and this is the reason we call him Midas.”

Shannon has had the fortune of working with some famous name like Justin Bieber, Academy Award nominated producer Kyle Townsend. Her work has found appreciation and support from Hollywood actors like David Arquette, Brittney Snow, Molly Burnet, Ed Westwick, Ian Bohem, Chrissie Fit, Kelley Jakle and Briana Evigan to name a few. With OMT, she has the privilege of working India’s most loved singer Sonu Nigam. To put it mildly, Shannon is thrilled, as she says, “It was a very memorable experience to work with such a legend whose songs I’ve always loved listening to. It was quite overwhelming to have a legend come and sing on her song and like the music and everything. Annabel and I got to learn so much from him as an artist and a human being. After dad, I think someone who is super talented yet down to earth is Sonu Nigam sir. It was an honor working with him and I can’t wait to work with him again!”

Shannon writes her songs with her sister Annabel K under the name ‘K sisters’ and she is only glad to have a work partner like her, “Annabel and I make a great team because we are quite the opposite. We are like magnets, so when we come together and join forces our creation reaches to another level. Annabel is a very intense and extremely talented songwriter. She may be younger than me but she has an old soul, which is quite interesting. Her lyrics are so deep rooted and genuine. I don’t think I would’ve come this far if it wasn’t for Annabel’s heartfelt lyrics. We do get into arguments and fights at times, due to that we don’t talk for a while but eventually come together when we create music and that’s the best part. She is very sincere with her work and she wants it to be done just how she imagines it so if I, by accident, sing a little off key or different then I always end up getting scolded by her. She is quite precise, but I love her very much.”

Shannon who made her Indian debut with Kumar Sanu for a song titled Its Magical, has at an early age done several shows around the states New York, New Jersey, Houston, Florida, Washington DC, Dallas, Atlantic City, Los Angeles among others. It’s no doubt that her father has influenced her and her music immensely. She shares, “My father was my very first teacher, who taught me what music actually is. His songs have always been a teaching to me and I have learned a lot by listening to him. I think the way, I express my emotions into songs have come from my dad and understanding what the mood of the song is has also come from my dad. There are a lot of things that I still need to learn because he is a school of music himself and you can never stop learning, but hopefully I’ll be just as great as him. “

Adding on the advice, he gives her to better and improve, Shannon says, “As a father and as a revered singer he always gives me advice despite of always travelling and doing concerts. He loves to know what I’m doing with my music and if I’m doing my daily vocals and what I should improve or focus on more. Whenever I have a recording session or a performance and he isn’t around with me, I would always call him and ask for any advice that I can get and he always tells me to sing from my heart and really feel what I am singing. He also shares some of his singing techniques with me and shows me how I can use them in my singing and how I should sing that particular line. “

The obvious question would be about her plans to enter Bollywood, but she is clear about her priorities, “Right now I am little busy with my beauty and jewellery line along with my music. But yes, in the future if I get an opportunity, I would love to sing in Bollywood since it looks pretty fun to sing in Hindi! Though people will have to excuse my terrible pronunciation.”
