MUMBAI: One of the few female music composers in India, Samira Koppikar has come up with a new single. Known for composing songs like the hard-hitting Mati Ka Palang from NH10, Samira’s new song is about relationships and love.
Samira explains the thought process and inspiration for Kaanch Se, “Kaanch Ke is a reflection of how fragile relationships are today. There can be cracks if one doesn't constantly work on them, the glass can shatter! I draw from experiences. It could be people around me or a book, I've read. Songs tell stories and touch people, who can relate to them.”
“My intent is to compose original music with good lyrics and melodies. We also ensure that as a team we keep working on creating sound that has an Identity for it to be Fresh, contemporary and relevant,” she adds.
The song features actress Aahana Kumra, who received critical acclaim for her movie, Lipstick Under My Burkha. Samira explains why they chose Aahana, “Aahana is a brilliant actress, loved her in Lipstick Under My Burkha. We felt that my voice suits her and that she would be able to emote effortlessly. She has done a fabulous job and brought out the essence of Kaanch Ke.”
The song has been shot in picturesque Thailand, “Our music video director Chirag had a concept and vision, which was in sync with the feel of our song. It was his creative decision to shoot it in Thailand and the location delivered the sublime scenery.”
She is also happy to collaborate with Zee Music as she exclaims, “The Zee team has been amazing! A vibrant and warm set of people, who are brimming with positivity! Anurag Bedi and his team are creating a wonderful platform for variety of artists on the non-film front. For my film work in Dobara, Bareilly Ki Barfi as well, the journey with Zee has been smooth and fun!”
Samira has made a mark for herself in Bollywood by giving some of the most amazing songs but that success hasn’t stopped her from making independent music, “I love song-writing and composing music. Female music directors are very few and usually, people are pleasantly surprised that I compose too. I find beauty in the entire process of making a song, be it the lyrics, melody, programming, arranging live Instruments and finally mixing and mastering. I have a team of some amazing people who are part of this journey. Film music inspires me to create music in the context of the script or requirements of the director or producer. Whereas when one puts out independent music, it is an extension and expression of the artist’s ideology and feelings.”
She continues saying what she enjoys doing the most, “I enjoy music composing and song writing the most. The amazing part is that singing is a part of this process, which I also love. I like creating songs and for each song, there’s a vision one has for its sound and its purpose.”
She is already in the process of her next project, which is different from the poignant Kaanch Se, “We are in the process of working on our next single, which most probably will be a duet of a peppy romantic genre. I also look forward to collaborating with some interesting male vocalists too and also many more singles and music videos this year.”
She also confirms her upcoming film projects, “There are some film songs coming up, for some really interesting films.”
