The most important thing required for a playback singer is soul: Kanika Kapoor

MUMBAI: While there are many music reality shows on-air currently, The Voice stands out for its selection process. The auditions taken for the show is in the ‘blind auditions’ format. The basic idea is that judges don’t get to see the auditioning contestant before hitting the buzzer of selection. The main reason for this process to select to ascertain the contestant only on the basis of his/her voice and singing capacities and nothing else. One of the judges or mentors on the show is the ultra-glamorous and enormously talented Kanika Kapoor.

“According to me, the most important thing required for a playback singer is soul and expression. Many singers don’t sing pitch perfect. Some of them are in our industry too. But what makes them a good singer is that sing with complete heart and soul. When you show Nakhra at the right time (in the song), it works,” says Kanika about what she is looking in a contestant.

She also adds, “These participants are getting a golden opportunity to present themselves on a platform like The Voice 3 during Prime Time and such opportunities are rare. The previous editions have been amazing and these ones will be more amazing too.”

About the presence of a maestro like A R Rahman as the super judge, Kanika says, “Rahman sir is someone, who uses new talent in his work. Therefore, it is an opportunity for the participants to perform their best. There would be pressure but it’s a good thing to have pressure.”

Beyond the resounding success, Kanika has seen some tough days, “I got this success after 15 long years of work. I never gave up and would advise the same to the youngsters. It’s a tough life in Mumbai. It looks all glamorous but there are lots of sacrifices that are to be made in order to reach at the top. I have sacrificed my time with my family and my three children. But you can’t give up and the one who gives up doesn’t make it here.”

Apart from being a mentor on The Voice 3, Kanika has lots in store for her fans, “I have a song coming up for a very big movie very soon. I can’t reveal the details at this moment. Last year I took a little easy and spent time with my children. Now I am back to work in full force.”

Continuing further, she adds, “I want to diversify. Initially composers or producers would think, I can sing a certain type of songs only. However, with Da Dassa Re from Udta Punjab, that perception has changed. I look forward to doing variety of songs.”

Signing off, she wishes all her fans a very happy Republic Day, “It is also my daughter’s birthday but I wouldn’t be with her as I am working. However, I wish all my fans a very happy 70th Republic Day.”
