MUMBAI: Singapore based singer Druv Kent pays an ode to his nation on the 70th Republic Day of India by releasing a new song called Hindustan Meri Jaan. Incidentally, his previous song was called Back Home, which was connected to India and feeling of being away from home.
Speaking about the song, Druv says, “At times we can forget that the aspirations, hopes and dreams that unite us and make us all Indian is far more than what divides us. And our beauty often lies in our differences and diversity. So, once I had the words rang terabhi, rang merabhi. I knew I had a beautiful and soulful song from the heart.”
With the Republic Day approaching, many composers compose patriotic songs as a tribute to our beautiful nation. Therefore, Druv explains what sets his song apart from the rest of the songs. “It’s both the words and the music. The lyrics are poetic and almost set as a love song to the country. It’s a little unusual in style perhaps and, in my view, makes the topic a little more personal and accessible. And the musical arrangement, which is contemporary and, while rooted in Indian rhythms and melodic movements, is also a product of our global musical influences. Then, personally, there’s the beautiful sarangi lead, which simply takes my breath away each time I hear the song,” he says.
He also accredits the success of the beautiful song created to his team, “While it’s my name on the front and my composition, the song is absolutely a team project. The lyrics are written by Hina Joshi, a lyricist friend. We worked together on the writing, but the poetic phrasing is beautiful and her contribution. The music is produced by Gaurav Godkhindi, who understands my western and Indian sensibilities and was able to translate it so seamlessly. And the video is directed by my longtime video-partner, Puneet Rakheja, who interprets my music into visuals that so easily complement what I am trying to convey in the song.”
Signing off, Druv resonates what every Indian living abroad feels when visiting India, “I am in and out of India, and always feel at home when I’m back home, as my recent song says. India is color, chaos, beauty, traffic, and amazing food. But, what I miss is the family and friends I have across the country. Which is partly the reason I am here so much!
The audio has released today and video will be available tomorrow onwards.
