MUMBAI: Gone are the times when certain sections of the Industry thought that ‘Lyrics toh chana bechne wala bhi likh sakta hai’. Now lyricist is one of the pillars in song creation,” says lyrcist Pinky Poonawala, who recently received international acclaim for the music video, Hausla Na Ruthe.
The scenario might be improving but lyricists are yet-to-cherish golden days in the Indian music industry.
On being asked, what changes she wants to make in the Indian music industry as a lyricist, Pinky shares, “One thing I would really want to change is irregularities in payments or even expecting artists to work for free. I feel like in any other job, as we start and we grow we have a certain payment package. The same should apply for singers, composers, musicians and lyricist.”
“I am one of the few artists who decided and do not work for free as a rule. But not all are able to face the risk of being replaced or losing out on work opportunity because you demand a fee. It’s a different thing when friends come together and create a song and a completely different scenario when one almost uses artists and their vulnerability and makes them work for free. I am extremely passionate about this subject and I would really like to see this change during my career span,” she adds.
Well, we hope Pinky’s dream of lyricist not working for free comes true.
