Madison's Saffola radio campaign triumphs at Emvies

MUMBAI: Madison Communications has bagged the Special Award for Best Radio Innovation, instituted by RAM (the Radio Audience Measurement division of TAM Media Research) for its 'Saffola (World Heart Day) - Radio Mumbai-Bringing Mumbai together' campaign at the Emvies 2008. The award, instituted for the first time, was a second feather in the cap for Madison Communications, which walked away with the Grand Emvie for the same radio campaign too.

Zee Network launches Zee Radio in London

MUMBAI: Zee Network launched Zee Radio in the UK. Shah Rukh Khan announced the launch of the Bollywood-centred radio station in the Zee Carnival 2008 held in London. Zee Radio is currently available in Greater London on 558 AM between 7 am and 1 pm daily and on DAB 24 hours a day. Online streaming will be available shortly. Khan, who was the face of the three-day event at the Olympia, London, congratulated Zee on its new initiative saying, "I would take this opportunity to congratulate Zee for the launch of their new radio, Zee Radio 558 AM (and DAB)."

Rolling Stones leave EMI for Universal

MUMBAI: After 20 years of association with EMI Records, international rock band the Rolling Stones, have switched loyalties to Vivendi SA's Universal Music. This is regarded as the second high profile act after Guy Hands had acquired the label last year. On Friday, Universal confirmed that both the band's future projects will be with the label. The label would also include their back catalogue including albums as "Sticky Fingers" and "Black and Blue" and songs "Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up."

Clear Channel shareholders approve $17.9 bn buyout

MUMBAI: The shareholders of the US radio broadcaster Clear Channel Communications Inc have approved the $17.9 billion takeover of the company by private equity funds Bain Capital Partners LLC and Thomas H Lee Partners LP. As per Clear Channel, approximately 97 per cent of the shares, voted at a special shareholders meeting on 24 July, were cast in favour of the deal. This will end a 20-month effort as the merger agreement of Clear Channel with the Bain/Lee group was first drafted in November 2006. Now, the parties are planning the $36-a-share buyout on 30 July.

UK ISPs, music industry plan fresh assault on illegal downloads

MUMBAI: UK ministers have proposed a plan that envisages millions of broadband users coughing up an annual levy which would allow them to download music from the internet. Users could face an annual charge to ?30 to download music, reports The Independent. Online piracy has lowered the physical sale in the market, with studies indicating that about 95 per cent of music downloads from the Internet are illegal. The money raised from this initiative would be channeled back to the rights-holders. Artists responsible for the most popular songs will receive a bigger slice of the cash.
