SFM expands its network in north east

MUMBAI: Sun Network will launch its FM radio station in Shillong this week through its subsidiary South Asia FM. Currently Shillong has only one private FM radio station Radio Ooo La La by NE Television Networks apart from AIR. Talking about this new development, SFM project head Nisha Narayanan avers, "It is challenging for any national player to break through and compete with a local player. The broadcasters based regionally understand the local ethos and pose as a threat to any national player."

"ISPs should embrace the future": McGuinness

Hong Kong: Internet service providers (ISPs) are looking at a future where their added value is going to come from tiered packages of commercial content, according to U2 manager Paul McGuinness. Delivering the keynote address on the opening day of Music Matters in Hong Kong on 4 June, McGuinness said the lines between distribution and content are getting blurred with the gold rush of broadband expansion on the wane. Citing the examples of News Corp and Apple, McGuinness said the trend would now be for companies not just to accentuate distribution, but to protect their content as well.

SpiralFrog inks licensing deal with EMI Music

MUMBAI: SpiralFrog will now begin offering content from Coldplay, Keith Urban and other recording artists as part of a new licensing deal with EMI Music. Terms of the deal between the two giants have not yet been disclosed. SpiralFrog is the latest entry into the music subscription space. It is an ad-supported service that allows registered users to download music tracks and music videos for free. The ads pay for the music and the company splits the ad revenue with the record companies.

Big FM conducts radio talent hunt in Chennai

MUMBAI: Big FM Chennai celebrated the 'Tamilian Pride' by conducting the first Semi Finals of the talent hunt on radio ?‹?“Big Singaara Singer. The audition was judged by prominent Tamil personalities like music director Vijay Anthony, playback singers Rahul Nambiar and Krish. This is the first of the two on-ground semi final rounds that are going to be conducted after the on-air preliminary rounds to identify two voices from Chennai. The two winners will be featured as playback singers by music director Vijay Anthony in his forthcoming movie.

Virgin Radio executive chairman Richard Huntingford quits

MUMBAI: Virgin Radio executive chairman Richard Huntingford will be leaving his post following the station's ?53.2 million (105 million) sale to the Times of India Group. This is the second time in a year that Huntingford is exiting from a radio company following its sale. Before this, he was the chief executive of Chrysalis, until the radio division was sold to Global Radio last year.
