MUMBAI – Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points has shared a new single, "Birth4000", which is out now via Ninja Tune.
"Birth4000" couldn't be more different sonically to these pursuits in its crunchy, gnarled, all-out energy. The track has already had a lasting impact on the summer's dance floors having been played out by Four Tet at his Finsbury Park headline show, as well as appearing in festival sets from Peggy Gou, Ben UFO, Palms Trax and more.
The track's artwork comes from Tokyo-based artist Akiko Nakayama. Nakayama is a painter who depicts the beauty of conveying energy metamorphosis through media such as installation, videos, and performance. She brings painting to life by combining the energy of movement and the vibrance of colours, called "Alive Painting".
Last month, the audience at a packed Hollywood Bowl witnessed Shepherd perform his Mercury Prize nominated masterpiece, 'Promises'. Shepherd assembled an all-star cast of players that included Shabaka Hutchings, Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), Dan Snaith (Caribou), Kara Lis Coverdale and Hinako Omori with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson conducting. The album was Pitchfork's highest rated of 2021 as well as being named 'Album of the Year' by Mojo and Time Magazine and being hailed as "one of the greatest modern jazz albums" by Resident Advisor.
Known for his complex and progressive electronic compositions, Floating Points serves up a cerebral yet driving sound that draws from house, techno, jazz, soul and classical music to give the crowd a full mind and body workout on the dance floor and on festival stages worldwide, including Laneway Festival Singapore, Wonderfruit (Thailand) and Sónar Hong Kong Festival.
