Opinion on the Grammys: A harmonious celebration

MUMBAI: Shakti, the groundbreaking Indo-jazz ensemble, emerged over half a century ago, championing improvisation as its core principle.

Led by tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain and British bassist John McLaughlin, the group's fusion of Eastern and Western influences initially puzzled traditional jazz aficionados. With violinist L Shankar and ghatam maestro Vikku Vinayakram completing the lineup, Shakti embarked on a mission to explore the uncharted territory of world music, long before the term gained widespread recognition.

Despite facing skepticism from some quarters, the ensemble persevered, gradually unraveling a tapestry of cross-cultural harmony that transcended mere musical experimentation—it became a profound lesson in collaboration and understanding. Over five decades, Shakti's enduring legacy has been validated with the coveted Grammy award for their latest album, "This Moment." Featuring tabla icon Hussain, guitar legend McLaughlin, and newcomers Shankar Mahadevan, V Selvaganesh, and Ganesh Rajagopalan, the album's eclectic blend of sounds earned it the title of Best Global Music Album.

Additionally, Hussain's collaboration on "As We Speak" secured another Grammy for Best Global Music Performance, showcasing the maestro's ongoing commitment to pushing musical boundaries. As Shakti continues to inspire with its unparalleled interplay of melodies, Hussain's poignant words upon receiving the accolade—"Without love, without music, without harmony, we are nothing"—serve as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of music and unity.
