Brahmanand Siingh to make documentary film on Jagjit Singh

MUMBAI: After releasing ‘Knowing Pancham’, a documentary based on famous yesteryear music composer, Rahul Dev Burman, filmmaker Brahmanand Siingh is now working on another documentary film titled, ‘Kaagaz Ki Kashti’. The upcoming documentary will be based on ghazal maestro, Jagjit Singh. The intention of making documentaries on these artists is to archive memories of the legends and remember their contribution to Indian music, said Siingh.

The filmmaker has been working on ‘Kaagaz Ki Kashti’ for eight months now, and intends to release it by October 2015. The biggest challenge while making a documentary, he says, is that everyone claims to be a very close friend of the artist; but in reality, it might be something else. “The thing is, if you talk about Jagjit Singh, there will be 10 people he has worked with. Everyone might claim to be his best friend, and might give you one or two small things, which might not even be relevant to the documentary film. So the challenge is to bring out what is relevant to you,” he stated.

Siingh, who launched ‘Knowing Pancham’ on 23 June said, “We, as a country, are not very good at archiving our own heritage. If we do not preserve them (artists) properly and show that side of them as human beings, what will future generations learn? For example Panchamda was a gem of a person. He was a great teacher and has offered songs to many new talents in the industry. Young or old, people would love to know more about him as a person, which is why I thought of making a documentary film about him.”

It took Siingh almost a year and a half to complete the documentary. The film talks about various aspects of Burman’s life, including his recording sessions and anecdotes with singers and actors. Composers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Randhir Kapoor and many other renowned celebrities have contributed to the documentary.
