Jasbir Jassi: I wanted to be lyrically strong so that I could contribute to society

MUMBAI: The voice behind the famous pop hit ‘Dil Le Gaye Kudi Gujarat Di’, Jasbir Jassi is known for his peppy numbers. However, he will break away from the norm with a soulful Sufi number ‘Ranjha’, which will be released by the end of March 2015. The track is both, written and composed by him.

“Sufi music has always been very close to my heart. Though I was known for my pop music, I still had an inclination towards soulful tracks, which is why I thought of the single. I started working on the song in July 2014, and it took a while to create the song,” said Jassi.

He has invested a good amount of time creating this single because he wanted to be lyrically strong, as a part of social responsibility. “The state of the youth in Punjab today is sad. A lot of these youngsters get influenced by pop albums and singles and also try and adopt the lifestyle promoted in the track. So if a song says doping or consuming alcohol is cool, a lot of youngsters take up the habit. Thus I wanted the track to be strong lyrically, and wished to create something that did not promote alcohol or drugs,” he further explained.

He also said that he felt today, Punjabis are perceived in a manner that they are only good at hurling abuses, hurling derogatory comments at women and getting drunk. “Most of the songs made in Punjabi are so abusive that the people think we are only good at abusing, boozing and indulging in bad deeds. It is strange that artistes make these songs only for gaining popularity and music labels even promote them,” he commented.

Apart from making and writing music, he also is an ardent follower of literature and loves meeting new people. His upcoming track will also have a music video, and the song will be available on all the platforms, including iTunes. The single will be released by Music Today.
