MUMBAI: Well-known Indian playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, best known for her singing in Bollywood was born on 25 January, 1958 in a Tamil Iyer family in New Delhi, India. Her birth name was Shradha Krishnamurthy but she is best known as Kavita in the music industry. She went ahead and changed her name yet again in 1999. This was the year of her marriage to violinist L Subramaniam. Thus, she is now known as Kavita Subramaniam.

· Kavita began her music training with her aunt, Bhattacharya who taught her Rabindra Sangeet.
· After completing her training, she began her formal training in Indian classical music under Balram Puri, a classical singer. She won her first gold medal at the age of eight in a music competition. She got an opportunity to sing a Tagore song in Bengali with the legendary Lata Mangeshkar at the age of nine.
· She is an alumna of St. Xaviers’ college, Bombay, from where she did her BA Honors in Economics. She was an active participant in her college’s music group.
· Singer-composer-music director Hemant Kumar’s daughter Ranu Mukherjee met Kavita Krishnamurthy accidentally and introduced her to her father. Kumar loved Kavita’s approach towards music and made her sing on stage during his live performances.
·During one of Krishnamurthy’s stage performance, singer Manna Dey spotted her and employed her to sing advertisement jingles.
·Later on, Krishnamurthy was introduced to Laxmikant from the composer duo Laxmikant-Pyrelal through Jaya Chakravarthy, actress Hema Malini’s mother.
· Music composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal backed her so strongly that she was labelled as a singer working exclusively with them. This gave many music directors an excuse to avoid working with her.
· Kavita’s career touched heights with ‘Tumse Milkar Na Jane Kyun’ from the film ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahin’ in the year 1985.
·After the success of her first hit, she gave back-to-back hits. ‘Hawa Hawai’ proved a turning point in Kavita’s life.
· She has sung many hit songs in Kannada films.
· Honoured with Padma Shri, Kavita has won Filmfare Awards for best playback singing four times in her life.
