MUMBAI: Suneeta Rao, the 'Paree of the Masses' is the Indipop diva who is a singer, dancer, and stage actress and has been a part of this industry for more than 25 years. She has five Hindi pop albums to her credit - 'Suneeta Senorita', 'Dhuan', 'Talaash', 'Ab Ke Baras' and 'Waqt' plus a single music video entitled 'Chhoti Chhoti Baatein' from the album 'Reason to Smile' involving various artists.
In a candid conversation with Radionadmusic.com, Indipop diva Suneeta Rao talks about the changing scene of the music industry and her journey and upcoming projects.
“Starting from the first album Suneeta Senorita, I’ve worked as a team. I have worked with wonderful musicians like Louiz Banks, Lesle Lewis. It was such a struggle for an independent artist during that time. Planning was not my thing. I never plan for more than a day. I was doing stage shows, theatres in college and the first singing break I got from the theatre,” said the ‘Paree Hoon Main’ singer.
While talking about the booming indie music scene in India, she added, “I have started my career as an independent artist. Previously there has been pop music. Over the time the music scene has been changing for good reasons obviously. Bollywood music doesn’t have any identity. A lot of talented artists are coming up and the web has a vast opening when it comes to indie music, though it is a huge struggle. Anyone can record a song, shoot a music video and put it on the web. One can work in a different way, be creative and produce eccentric stuff on his/her own and that’s a great thing. We didn’t get the chance to utilize the power of the web in earlier days. For me, music is reaching out to people.”
Suneeta has just returned from a show in China, Kasol Music Festival, Bangaluru and she is collaborating with Artist Aloud for her upcoming original singles. A few live stage performance offers, collaborating with different musicians are on her plate now, coupled with her hobbies such as learning the Salsa, Flamenco dance, and Bharatnatyam.
“Apart from live shows and concerts I am also actively involved with ‘Laadli’ organized by an NGO called Population First. Our agenda is saving the girl child, population control and other social movements in India,” she smiles.
