12 things you should know about the eccentric Monica Dogra

MUMBAI: Monic Dogra has had an eventful year with her solo album (Spit) release in January (2016) and an Emmy nomination for her international docu-series ‘Woman With Gloria Steinem’. There is something unconventional about the musician-actor who has been a part of the musical revolution in India for almost ten years. We can’t afford to ignore her calibre, especially on her birthday!

Monica Dogra is US-based Indian-origin artiste whose maternal uncle Prakash Sharma is the famous Dogri folk music singer.

Monica is a Bachelor’s degree holder in musical theatre from the New York University (NYU).

Monica’s debut album was ‘New Day: The Love Album’ (2007) as ‘Shaa’ir and Func’ comprising of herself and Randolph Correia, the guitarist (Pentagram fame).

Dogra released her much controversial music video art project ‘Shiver’ on 26 September 2016, which she considers as her large collaborative project.

She had made a special appearance in the Indian rock musical flick ‘Rock On!!’ (2008). In the very same year, Monica got the lead role in Kiran Rao’s directorial debut titled ‘Dhobi Ghat’.

She has been judging India’s first English music talent hunt show The Stage since Season One. The Stage Season Two is ongoing now on Colors Infinity. Also, Monica had even been a judge on a music-based talent contest by Rolling Stone, titled ‘Never Hide Sounds’. She has even hosted ‘The Dewarists’, a musical travel TV series which was aired on Star World India.

Monica Dogra recreated 'Trouble' with Malaysian singer Resh under Universal Music in 2016. Also, she collaborated with UK-based D-Code during July (2016).

Monica had been nominated by VH1 at the 2015 Europe Music Awards under the Best India Act category, which falls under the Worldwide Act category.

There are two international albums and two national albums that created Monica’s musical journey. So much shouting, so much laughter by Ani DiFranco, Tidal by Fiona Apple, Bombay by AR Rahman and Realize by Karsh Kale.

Monica had performed at Glastonbury Festival in 2007-2008, Smirnoff Music Exchange (Toronto) 2010, India Festival (Amsterdam) 2009 and much more. She was the first woman to play at The Big Chill, India.

Monica formed her first band in Mumbai ‘Change of Plan’ with Mohan Kannan from the band Agnee.
