MUMBAI: While Mumbai, as a city, is lined with multiple performing venues, some of them are extra special. Royal Opera House being one of them. Initially known as just Opera House, Royal Opera House is the only surviving opera house in India currently.
In the colonial times, Opera House would be open for screening of movies too, however with advent of VCRs and piracy, the theatres were shut and Opera House too suffered. Post the renovation and restoration in 2016, the now known as Royal Opera House is open only for performances and live shows and not movie screenings, despite the first event held post the renovation was MAMI film Festival that year. Standing true to its name, the place is now privately owned by the Royal family of Gondals in 1952.
First inaugurated by King George V in 1911, this venue is a dream for many art lovers to showcase their art. The ornate and Baroque décor is the only one in Mumbai currently and is known as Cultural Crown Jewel of the city.
Speaking about the difference of the venue, Asad Laljee, the cultural Curator and CEO and VP Avid learning, Essar Group, of the venue shared, “We are just not venue partners, but curators of the event. Therefore, there is a lot of thought and understanding of the events presented. We have had legends like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan present his concerts or piano shows by eminent foreign artistes or a new talent performing here. Our idea is to be the cultural hub for the city.”
The Royal Opera House Mumbai was in the 2012 report for World Monuments Watch to raise awareness about its history and significance, and support preservation efforts. Located at the crux of the city at Grant Road junction, Royal opera House shines of old world charm
Asad continues, “Our greatest advantage is the location of the venue. Also, the historical significance makes the venue extremely interesting. There are so many venues and shows in Mumbai happening. We want to make sure that our presentation stands apart with the kind of shows we curate.”
What is also known to be a part of Mumbai’s heritage is a vibrant place with old world décor for musical shows. A must visit if you already have not.
