Adnan Sami under a scanner for alleged tax evasion
MUMBAI: Only a few days ago Adnan Sami was in the news over his expired visa. Now the Pakistani singer is under scrutiny by the Service Tax Department regarding alleged tax evasion and has been summoned by the department on Monday for questioning. According to sources, the Service Tax Department booked a case against the 44 year old musician on 15 October for supposedly evading service tax on some of his previous projects and assignments.
As per agency reports, an official said, “We have not been able to consolidate the exact figure of evasion. Sami will be grilled on Monday and then only we would be able to ascertain the amount.” Officials have also asked Sami to carry all the various records concerning his work to the questioning on Monday.
The London born singer/ songwriter, who has been calling India home for the last decade or so, was embroiled in a visa controversy after the Mumbai Police served him a notice for overstaying in the country despite his visa expiring. However, Sami claims that he has followed due procedures and applied for a visa extension before it could expire.
On 17 October, the Ministry of Home Affairs did grant him a three month extension on his visa.
