Springsteen's 'Born to Run' handwritten draft sells at $197,000

MUMBAI: An unknown bidder has bought veteran rocker, Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run' handwritten lyric sheet for a whopping $197,000 at an auction held in New York City. Auctioneers Sotheby claimed that the 1974 draft, which was written with blue ink in the singer's curvy hand, sold for more than twice its estimated price of $70,000 - $100,000.

'Born to Run' became the title track to Springsteen's 1975 album of the same name and is also considered the American anthem. It took the singer/songwriter six months to complete the track, and made him "The Boss" when it was released.

The handwritten lyrics are penned down on a notebook page and illustrate the rocker's creative songwriting process. Although most of the lyrics from the auctioned draft did not make their way onto the final recording, his famous line "Tramps Like us baby, we were born to run" did. Sources said that the document was previously in the possession of Mike Appel, Springsteen's former manager.

Springsteen's lyric draft was auctioned on Thursday as a part of a sale for Sotheby's Fine Books and Manuscripts. Other items auctioned during the sale included works by William Shakespeare, Thomas Jefferson and Ernest Hemingway, several love letters by Rolling Stones frontman- Mick Jagger and a letter from John Lennon. The auction reportedly brought in more than $3.7 million.
