MUMBAI: With International Jazz day coming up, The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is happy to present a spectacular jazz performance by the celebrated band Mingus Dynasty Quintet on Thursday, 23rd April 2020 at 6 pm, on the NCPA Youtube channel.
New York City's Mingus Dynasty Quintet debuted in India for the first time ever at the NCPA International Jazz Festival 2019. The nimble and expert Mingus Dynasty was the first band Sue Mingus organized after the legendary Jazz icon, Charles Mingus’s death in 1979. The first Dynasty bands were expected to include only musicians who had actually performed with Mingus. Today, forty years later, the rich legacy of Mingus music ignites the bandstand while new generations of musicians add their individual voices and continue to interpret and build on his compositions. This band consists of artists featured in the 2011 Grammy Award-winning album, Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard.
At NCPA, the ensemble performed as a quintet -- the format most celebrated by Charles Mingus during the peak of his career, and a configuration that his partner-in-time drummer Dannie Richmond majestically referred to as “The First Band In Jazz”.
