Elvis Presley biopic could be directed by Baz Lurhmann

MUMBAI: Rock 'n' Roll icon Elvis Presley featured in more than 30 films while he was alive. Now it seems like “The King” will be immortalised in an upcoming biopic, based on his life, and according to reports, Australian director Baz Luhrmann looks most likely to helm the project.

Although there has been no official statement as yet, it is believed that Warner Bros, who will be making the film, have been in talks with the 'Romeo + Juliet' director for a while now. Reports also state that the company has secured rights to the legendary singer's extensive catalogue of music.

There is speculation that Kelly Marcel will be penning the script for the film. Marcel has been credited with writing the screenplay for the Tom Hanks starrer- 'Saving Mr. Banks' and the hotly anticipated 'Fifty Shades of Grey'. The script will not be based on any material that already exists, which means that it is unsure which part of Presley's life it will focus on. Other details of the film are still unknown.

With Lurhmann's directorial style, which is very music centric and includes extravagant sets, it is no wonder that Warner Bros is looking to rope him in for the Elvis Presley biopic. His latest movie 'The Great Gatsby' which starred Leonardo DiCaprio was a huge success, as was his 2001 Oscar winning musical film 'Moulin Rouge' which featured Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The latter also won a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
