‘2 States’ took home two gongs- Album of the year – Jury and Music Composer of the Year, which went to Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Shankar and Loy were on hand to receive the award; however Ehsaan was away at a performance.
The Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Happy New Year’ also received two awards for Lyricist of the Year, which was given to Irshad Kamil and Sound Engineering of the Year, which went to Satchith Harvey, Abhishek Ghatak and Murli.
The event was hosted by Aditya Narayan and Ayushmann Khurrana, while Palak Muchhal opened the show with a performance of her songs ‘Ice Cream Kahonge’, ‘Meri Aashiqui’ and others.
Singer Sugandha Mishra tickled the funny bone of the audiences by posing as the ‘Queen of Melody’ Lata Mangeshkar. She poked fun at various composers including Yo Yo Honey Singh and Meet Brothers, and commented on the similarity of the songs being produced today in a comical manner.
Lyricist Javed Akhtar was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award and while delivering his acceptance speech, he became emotional and remembered to thank Yash Chopra who instilled faith in him and gave him a first break as a lyricist. “I was always a script writer and I secretly liked writing shayris and poems. Only a few of them knew about my liking and it so happened that Yashji got to know about my liking and it was him who pushed me to write lyrics and I was very skeptical doing so but then I did it,” he said. He also appealed the producers to give a free hand to composers and singers. Singers like Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Abhijeet, Anu Malik, Shankar Mahadevan, Ankit Tiwari and Alka Yagnik paid tribute to the living legend by singing his songs.
