MUMBAI: After releasing a new single a few months ago, the Indo-American, gypsy jazz/cabaret band- Peter Cat Recording Co. (PCRC) will finally release its third album. The yet-untitled album will be a follow up to 2012’s ‘Wall of Want’. For the new record, the band has slightly changed its sound, said vocalist Suryakant Sawhney.

When pushed further on PCRP’s change of sound for the new record, he said, “While lyrically the sound of PCRC is the same, sonically, we have changed it for the new record. It sounds more old-school American, some Old British music and some interesting influences of African music, especially from Ethiopia.” Sawhney alternates between Peter Cat Recording Co. and his own solo music act, Lifafa, whose music, he describes as ‘chudail-step’.

He also said that the new record will have about eight to nine new original tracks. He also said that the band is looking at releasing a new single in the next couple of weeks. This news comes in light of PCRC’s track ‘Pariquel’ being improvised into ‘Jaanam’ and being featured on the soundtrack of the upcoming Bollywood film, ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’.

Speaking about the track, Sawhney said, “We found out a while ago that Dibakar Banerjee, the director of the film, he really like the track ‘Pariquel’ from our first album ‘Sinema’, how it sounded and how it was recorded; and wanted to use it in some capacity for the movie.” The track on the film’s soundtrack features Hindi lyrics, as opposed to the original English lyrics. “I did not scribe the Hindi lyrics from a translation point of view of changing it from English to Hindi. The basic motif was of a promiscuous woman. The track reflects an internal dialogue, a sort-of escapist man would have. He is really resentful towards her, but moves past his resentment and continues to express his love for her,” said Sawhney. “It was just more about finding the right rhythm.”

Sawhney also revealed that there is another Lifafa album in the works, which he hopes will see the light of day in the next few months. The new Lifafa record will be a follow up to the ‘In Hi Ko’ EP that he released last May.
