MUMBAI: After charting two number one singles- ‘The Hills’ and ‘Can’t Feel My Face’, Canadian singer/songwriter- The Weeknd has earned a total of five People’s Choice Awards. The nominations, which were announced on 3 November, will see the 25-year-old take on some of the biggest names in music, in several categories including Breakout Artist, Favourite Male Artist and Favourite Album.
The Weeknd has been nominated for Favourite Male Artist, alongside Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas and Luke Bryan. His hit track- ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ also faces competition from Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ feat. Kendrick Lamar, Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean’, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s ‘See You Again’, and Ellie Goulding’s ‘Love Me Like You Do’.
In yet another category- Favourite Breakout Artist- The Weeknd faces competition from Shawn Mendes, Fetty Wap, Tori Kelly and Halsey. He will also fight for Favourite R&B Artist in a category that includes names like Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Ne-Yo and Ciara.
In the Favourite Album category, the artist’s 2015 release- ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ will go up against Drake’s ‘If You're Reading This It's Too Late’, Fall Out Boy’s ‘American Beauty/American Psycho’, Meghan Trainor’s ‘Title’, and Imagine Dragon’s ‘Smoke + Mirrors’.
Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons have earned another nomination for Favourite Group. The ‘Demons’ hitmakers will compete against One Direction, Maroon 5, Fifth Harmony and Fall Out Boy in the category.
Another artist to earn two nominations for the People’s Choice Awards is Taylor Swift, who goes up against Selena Gomez, Lana Del Ray, Demi Lovato and Madonna for Favourite Female Artist. ‘Material Girl’ Madonna has earned one more nomination in the Favourite Music Icon category alongside Stevie Wonder, Prince, Paul McCartney and Steve Tyler.
‘Roller Coaster’ hitmaker- Luke Bryan also earned another nomination apart from Favourite Male. In the Favourite Male Country Artist he faces competition from Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley. In the Favourite Female Country Artist Carried Underwood has been nominated alongside Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire and Cassadee Pope.
Some of the other artists to have earned nominations include Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifa, Drake, Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar for Favourite Hip-Hop Artist.
Voting for the 2016 People’s Choice Awards is already open, and the event will air on Wednesday, 6 January on CBS.
