Streaming giant Spotify expands into video and podcast content

MUMBAI: Spotify, the Swedish commercial music streaming service, has expanded its content into video and podcasts, as was announced recently in a release. From personalised recommended video and podcast content, to premiering exclusive new original tracks and specially curated radio shows, the streaming giant is expected to top digital streaming worldwide.

Spotify will now add video clips and audio shows to the music mix. Through its new feature called ‘More Than Music’, the service will suggest video and audio shows to watch. ‘Running Originals’ features music specifically designed for running that dynamically adapts to the user’s running tempo. Spotify’s new range of exclusive content includes ‘Dance Move of the Day’ produced by Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls brand, as well as, specially curated radio shows presented by artists such as Swedish DJ duo Icona Pop, British modern soul collective Jungle and American rapper Tyler the Creator. Another unique video feature Spotify will offer is ‘Turntable’, a video podcast that brings together chefs and musicians for an intimate performance and meal.

Speaking on this expansion, Spotify Founder and CEO Daniel Ek said, “We are bringing you a deeper, richer, more immersive Spotify experience. We want Spotify to help soundtrack your life by offering an even wider world of entertainment with an awesome mix of the best music, podcasts and video delivered to you throughout your day. And we are just getting started.”

Here is a complete list of the new features, audio and video that will soon appear on the streaming giant’s website:

A Full English (video): A conversation between artists and personalities, widely separated by experience, who try to find common ground over a meal – a proper breakfast in this case.

Incoming (audio): A weekly audio show hosted by Joe Levy and guests, taking you through the best new music around.

Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls Present Dance Move of the Day (video): A fun way for the adventurous to get their dance party started.

Guest List (video): Ever wondered what your favourite music star sings in the shower? Or what they want played at their funeral? Tune in to find out.

These shows, with more to be added soon, complement Spotify’s current original content roster which includes:

The Drop (video): Artists tell the story of how their new album came to life.

Spotify Sessions (audio and video): Intimate performances from the hottest new artists to living legends.

Landmark (audio and video): An aural history of some of the greatest records ever released, told by the legends who helped create them.

For the same purpose, Spotify has partnered with Viacom’ Comedy Central, VH1, MTV, along with BBC, Vice News and CBS Radio. It has also partnered with American Public Media’s Marketplace radio show, The Splendid Table radio show and WNYC Studios’s Radiolab and Freakonomics Radio.  ‘Talks for Spotify’ features custom playlists created by TED.

Along with the aforementioned, Spotify also announced its partnership with Nike. Spotify is integrating the RunKeeper app with Spotify Running to be launched later this year, along with allowing users to access the new Spotify Running experience through the Nike+ app.
