Samsung launches first solar powered handset

Samsung India has announced the global launch of Solar Guru E1107, the world's first solar powered mobile phone.

The handset priced at Rs 2,799 in the Indian market enables users to charge the battery using solar energy. An alternative energy source is always an added advantage especially in India, where there is abundant sunlight, says the company.

Samsung West Asia, President and CEO, J S Shin says, The Solar Guru has been developed keeping in mind the needs of Indian consumers, especially customers residing in areas where the electric supply is unstable, so that the consumers can rely on solar charging to remain connected....

The mobile phone from Samsung has a dual charging option. The default is the normal charger using electricity and the alternate option is from the solar energy. Solar charging is not as effective and fast as the conventional electrical charger. It could take about 10 to 14 hours to fully charge using the solar energy. Samsung claims that the handset has a capacity to provide five-10 minutes of talk time when charged for an hour.

Samsung, Country Head (Mobile Division), Sunil Dutt says, With Samsung's cutting edge technology and consumer-oriented strategy, I believe the Solar Guru is the perfect fit for the Indian consumer – not only because it is solar powered, but because it has a host of customized features , especially developed keeping in mind the needs of Indian consumers...

Its other features include FM radio, MP3 ring tones, embedded games, torch light, mobile tracker and mobile player.

Solar power is increasingly gaining importance in the scheme of things for telecommunication industry. Earlier in the week TelecomTiger reported how a Finland-based firm, Suntrica has come with a solar powered mobile charger.
