Kailesh Kher on Radio One FM 94.3

MUMBAI: The unbelievably humble and courteous soul, a singer by profession, Kailash Kher who immediately shot to fame with his famous `Allah ke bande¦` trails his evolution as a singer on Radio One FM 94.3`s, "BBC Ek Mulakat" on Sunday, September 16th 2007.The programme, anchored by Sanjeev Srivastava, India Editor - BBC Hindi, is broadcast every Sunday at 12 noon in Mumbai and Delhi.

A man, whose struggling days were harsh as the blistering heat of the summer sun and long and dark as the never ending moonless nights, speaks openly and honestly when he says, "I didn`t know any young musician who had made a name for himself in the world by means of classical music. You need to be old in this. Only after you grow old do you get titles like Pandit and Ustad prefixed to the name. I belong to a middle class family. I had to also prove am capable of doing something¦ so I adopted Sufi style of singing." His passion for music is evident when he expresses "Music is not just a means of entertainment but also a means to awaken the soul. Music makes you experience the `nau-ras` or nine emotions. It turns death into life-giving nectar [amrit]."

On quizzing what his inspiration in life is, and the reason for his soulful voice, Kailash says, "The way the churning of milk separates the cream and the whey, my life has been somewhat like that. After all those experiences, what`s left of me is attached to the soul and it sounds like I am singing straight from the soul. "

Kailash Kher disclosing his rather lighter side when he blatantly says, "There was some man called Arshad Warsi in my first film. I had no idea then¦".

Speaking about A R Rahman, he says, "I want to sing with AR Rahman. He may have some shortcomings in his music levels, but he sings from the heart. I like such people who get immersed in their singing."

He leaves one wondering when he reveals, "I observe people`s actions. People have got used to newspapers, otherwise there is so much that is written on faces."
