Android surpasses Symbian for the first time in India: IDC report

MUMBAI: Google's android has overtaken Symbian OS for the first time in India and has emerged as the top OS platform with 42.4% smartphone market share, according to research firm IDC's Q3 2011 Mobile Phone Tracker report.

As per the report, the mobile handset shipments in India have also increased by 13.8 per cent to 47 million units in July-September 2011 as propelled by sales of dual-SIM handsets.

The reports states android platform had witnessed a growth of 90% over the previous quarter. The Apple's iOS platform share in the smartphone market has consolidates further from 2.6 percent (in Q2) to 3.09 percent (in Q3).

Mobile Phones lead analyst G Rajeev said, "From an operating system (OS) perspective, Android overtook Symbian to emerge as the top platform in India for the first time, with a share of 42.4% of the smartphone market."

International Data Corporation (IDC) Research Director for India Deepak Kumar stated, "The slowdown of Nokia's smartphones shipment is in line with the expectations that it would be prepping to transition some of its market share from Symbian to Windows....

On a quarter-on-quarter year-on-year basis, mobile phone shipments were up 12 by per cent.  The mobile phone shipments witnessed a spurt, as vendors built channel inventories ahead of a long festival season. Dual-SIM handset shipments were notable, with a sequential growth of 25.2 per cent over the previous quarter,... Kumar added.

In the quarter, the smartphone segment has witnessed a growth of 51.5 per cent year-on-year and 21.4 per cent over previous quarter to garner a 6.5 per cent share of the overall mobile phone market.

The smartphone segment is forecasted to see 77.5 million units of shipments by 2015 with 63.4% rise in CAGR, whereas, CY 2011 is expected to close with mobile phone shipments of around 184.4 million units. IDC also forecasts the market to clock 301 million by CY 2015, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.03 during the period of 2011-2015.
